08/31/2008 Gentle Giant Star Wars Aayla Secura Mini Bust Review

Today I bring you an obligatory review of the Gentle Giant Star Wars Aayla Secura Mini Bust. Anyone who has known me for any length of time knows that I have a fan boy crush on this character so I would have to review this bust. What can I say, I like blue skin girls with lightsabers.

The box is once again sports the standard high end collectible pattern to it shared by several companies including Gentle Giant. Once again it is really boring me as it has been in use for awhile now. I know I am sounding like a broken record on this box style but I am really getting bored with it. I welcome a change for 2009. I am actually praying for one at this point. Anything with a little more pop to it.

I like this sculpt. I have heard a couple of people complain that it doesn't look enough like the actress Amy Allen. I think it does. OK it might not be 100% dead on but I can easily tell it is supposed to be her and not just the character. Even if you argue that it doesn't look like Amy, I can't see how you can argue against it looking very much like the character.

I have also heard people say she looks horse faced. I just don't get that comment at all.

The paint scheme and application are both very good. She is the right color of blue and it is quite vibrant. This bust will stick out in the crowd of your other Star Wars busts.

The lightsaber blade comes unattached in the box. There is a long metal peg in the blade that will plug it into the lightsaber handle. The peg extends quite a ways into the blade so it is easily visible. I wish there was a way to make this less noticeable.

At every angle you will see the sexiness of the character that gets fan boys all worked up about this character. It is no wonder Gentle Giant finally got around to making a bust of this character. They didn't overdue the sexiness in my opinion. You could have easily have overdone it and made it sort of silly.

My one complaint of this piece is the sculpt of her hands. I can't quite put my finger on it but there is something wrong with those fingers. They don't look very natural to me but rather like strips of clay. This is a real minor complaint as they aren't that bad - just enough for me to look puzzled at them.

Gentle Giant made an edition size of this bust at 4,250 total pieces. That is quite a lot - more than I think was probably necessary. I would have thought they would have made 2,500-3,000. I am afraid there may not be as many Aayla nuts out there like me and the bust may not hold its value well. We'll see - and I would happily be wrong.

I paid $50 for this bust at my local comic shop which I find to be a good deal in today's marketplace. I think if you shop well, you could find this bust for $10 less but then would have to pay shipping on top of that. If you want it and spot it at a local store for $50, I would grab it.

I am giving this bust a **** out of five star rating. It is very nice looking bust and fairly priced. I was looking forward to an Aayla Secura bust for awhile now. This one didn't put me in a state of awe but it is still very nice. I think it would make a great addition to anyone's Gentle Giant Star Wars bust collection.
