09/08/2008 Kaiyodo Yatake Yoshinori's El with Reideen PVC figure review
Too often I find myself buying a toy without a real reason why. Sometimes I get something cool with my impulse buy and sometimes I don't. This time I think I have the former - something cool. I present Kaiyodo Yatake Yoshinori's El with Reideen PVC figure. I can't remember where I first saw this figure but I remember it making an impression because once I saw it solicited in Diamond Comics Previews, I knew I had to order it.
I can't really tell you much about this figure other than a little of what I found on the internet. Yatake Yoshinori appears to be a Japanese artist that came up with this toy as an original idea and not based on a previously existing work. I don't know if this is part of an ongoing toy line, the start of one or or a one of idea.
The packaging is pretty nice and standard. The colors are nice and solid. There is a pretty large window to the front of the box that displays most of the toy inside. There is a pretty cool reflective look to the inside of the box that gives it a unique look in the sea of other toy packages. One downside is the package isn't very sturdy. It looks like you could easily end up with a shelf worn box like I did. I don't think mine held up to all the handling it had on its way to me.
This figure has a bit of steam punk thing going on for it - at least it does to me. It looks a little space age in the 1920's or 30's. I think that is why I gravitated to it. It is so different and more unique looking than a lot of the mainstream big box store toys I have been getting lately. I need a curve ball item like this once in awhile.
The figure is about eight inches tall including the base. There is no articulation to it. It is more of a PVC statue than an action figure. There is a lot of detail going on around this figure. It is very well painted - so much so it is part of the toy's character.
The only removable accessory is a set of goggles. You can display the figure with them on or off.
I am going to leave mine on as the head seems a bit bare without them. It also reveals the only coloring problem I have with the figure. I find the hair color to be an odd shade of gold. It doesn't seem like the right shade for how the rest of the figure is painted. It just feels a bit off to me and the goggles help it be less obvious to me.
The box doesn't tell me much about the figure (The text is almost all in Japanese) but it does tell me this is an electric rod. I don't know what that is but it looks she could really whack someone with it at the least.
And then this might be the reideen. I don't know what it is either other than it says Accel on one side where it looks a bit like a radiator.
And looks a bit like a turn table on the other side. Maybe it is the source of power for her electric rod.
It all seems to fit together for one interesting figure.
A lot of time when I see a PVC or vinyl figure of an import anime girl like this, they seem to start around $69.99. I never get them in part because of that high price. I would just rather spend my money else where for that. This one was $23.99 so it felt much more easy to take a chance on it. I am glad I did. If you are interested in this figure, I think your best chance on getting it is an online store or eBay. The prices are pretty good for both and you could easily get one for less than I did. I am giving this figure a **** out of five star rating. It was a really cool figure for me to get. It is something new and fresh for my shelves. Something that can stimulate my mind a bit more than my 1,000th differently painted clone trooper will.
