09/13/2008 Toys R Us Exclusive Hasbro Transformers Titanium The War Within Grimlock review

I am back with another Transformer. Today it is the Toys R Us exclusive Titanium The War Within Grimlock. Based on the comic book of the same name, I knew this was a Grimlock I wouldn't be able to pass up. I am a sucker for some die cast metal on a cool Transformer. This figure is being released along with another Titanium Transformer Prowl now at Toys R Us.

The packaging is the same Transformers Titanium packaging that we have seen over the last couple of years. It will fit right into your collection of existing Titanium Transformers.

My biggest problem is there were a ton of wires used to tie this figure down on the package. It took me far too much effort and the use of a wire cutters to free this toy from the package.

The artwork reflects the character within. It is a nice touch to personalize each character's package like this.

And there is the standard information on the back about the character in the War Within.

The figure comes in robot mode. I am glad because that is the mode that was the biggest selling point for me. He just looks menacing and ready to put a world of hurt on some unlucky Decepticon.

The accessories are a sword and gun. These are easily identifiable as Grimlock's. They were definitely inspired by the Generation 1 Grimlock's weapons. I like that they went in this direction because it helps identify the character. There is also a small plastic base with his name on it. It isn't very exciting of an accessory but it serves its purpose I suppose. There are no pegs on the base or anything else to help secure the toy to it.

And this is the end of my love affair with the toy. He was easy enough to transform into vehicle mode but what the heck is this? It is like some sort of lame space age truck or something. I fine with these War Within Transformers looking a bit alien but this is a really lame vehicle. I want Grimlock to be something a little more imposing than this. I am not inspired by the character's might when it looks like this.

And I do have one issue with the transformation process. When you have the legs transformed in the "truck bed" like this - as shown on the box and the instructions

The small wheels underneath the tracks can't touch the ground as the other side of the legs protrudes too far.

However when you turn the legs around at the waist and then rotate the treads

The wheels are able to freely roll on the ground. Which is the right way? I don't know.

Because this is a Toys R Us exclusive, they raised the price to $19.99. It is only $5 more than what they were previously charging for Titanium Transformers. I don't feel the price increase is out of line and was happy enough to buy this figure. It is shipping now but I suspect this might be difficult to find in some areas.

I am giving this figure a *** out of five star rating. It is awesome in robot mode but a snooze in vehicle mode. Hard to be excited about a futuristic lawnmower (as a friend of mine called it).
