05/02/2008 Gentle Giant Star Wars Admiral Ackbar Mini Bust

Next up for review is a Gentle Giant Star Wars Admiral Ackbar bust. One of the reasons I always liked Star Wars over Star Trek is the diversity of aliens in the Star Wars universe. Trek aliens bore me a bit - Look a human with pointy ears, a human with a bumpy forehead and over there a human with a bumpy nose. Oh I forgot the human with pink freckles and the human with green skin. In the Star Wars universe the aliens come in all shapes and sizes.

Admiral Ackbar is one of those interesting aliens. Yes he is just a fish guy but he is an interesting fish guy to me. Gentle Giant did a pretty good job capturing it with this bust. The sculpt and paint job are pretty faithful to the character and overall it is pretty pleasing to look at. Yes he isn't an A-lister character but all these rich background characters is exactly what makes the SW universe interesting.

BUT in my eyes there is a major flaw to this bust - two if you are really technical - the eyes. GG added these swell marble type eyes to the bust but in order to do so they had to make the lower eye lid a separate piece from the rest of the bust. Maybe it is just my bust but these lower eye lids are TOTALLY distracting. Not only are they a different skin tone than the rest of the bust but there are some serious gaps around the seems. I hope for the sake of this bust that only mine is messed up but I have a feeling most of them are. I have tried to take a few pictures to show this but they all didn't come out the greatest. Trust me when I say it distracts from the piece.

This bust is limited to 4,000 pieces and because he is a background character, I don't think he will be too hard to track down. Expect to pay around $50 retail for this bust.

I can only give this bust a ** 1/2 rating out of five stars because of the eye issues. It is too distracting for me. Actually it was so distracting my comic shop nearly returned it for a refund when they saw it. I figured by looking at it most of them would be this way so I stuck with the one I had for my collection. It could have easily had another full star added to the overall rating if it didn't have this issue.
