06/01/2008 Medicom 400% Alien Kubrick Review

I have a handful of both Alien and Star Wars Kubrick figures but I have not been lucky enough to pick up any of the 400% size versions until now. I regret not getting the 400% Boba Fett and once I saw this 400% Alien in the Diamond Comics showroom at New York Toy Fair, I knew I couldn't let this get past me. This is a case of size mattering and it is totally awesome!

Medicom doesn't make all of its Kubricks in the larger 400% format only the more popular ones. This particular Alien is based on a 2006 San Diego Comic Con exclusive figure.

The first think you will notice about the packaging is it is a plain brown outer box protecting the inner box. There is nothing terribly exciting about this outer box but it does include a cutout so you can see the figure inside. Don't let this outer box fool you. There is something even cooler waiting on the inside.

.

Once you have pulled the inner box out you will immediately see that the inner box is a terrific nod to the vintage Kenner figure. The packaging is a very cool reproduction done in Kubrick style. It makes me practically as giddy as a school girl seeing this box. It is totally fun.

This figure is massive - 280 mm tall according to the box or about 11 inches for you metric challenged people (like myself). It has all the standard articulation of a Kubrick figure but is not put together the same way. I could not get the head or limbs to pop off like the smaller versions. They might still come off but I didn't want to force the matter and break this high dollar toy. Also the shoulder and leg articulation points have snaps in them so they can hold their position once moved.

The paint job is only a basic job but recreates the paint scheme on the smaller version faithfully. The outer clear dome to the head also comes off.

There is a retractable inner jaw. It is a pretty manual process to use it. First you need manually lower the jaw and then slide the inner jaw forward with the small lever located underneath the back of the head. It would have been nice to see some sort of spring loaded function for this - especially considering the price - but I know this is supposed to be nothing more than a 400% larger version of the small toy.

The only real accessory is a pretty cool surprise. Medicom included a poster inside the packaging like Kenner did back in the day with their figure. Like the box Medicom recreated this poster in a great Kubrick style.

This cost me $74.99 at my local comic shop so it is pricey. I had pre-ordered it through the Diamond Previews catalog. I have seen this for sale as much as $125. $75 is a big pill for a lot of people to swallow on an item like this. I can recommend it at that price but not at a $125-$150 price.

I am giving this figure a **** rating out of five stars. It is an awesome figure with great nostalgia attached to it. The only thing keeping it from getting a higher score from me is its high price. You probably don't NEED it but it is a really cool looking toy. If you are a collector of either Alien items, brick type figures or have a soft spot for vintage style toys, this can't be missed.

I am finishing this review with a couple of comparison shots of this 400% Kubrick with its smaller 2006 SDCC exclusive cousin.
