06/22/2008 Diamond Select Toys Battlestar Galactica Colonial Viper MK II Statue Review

It is back to back Diamond Select Toys Battlestar Galactica reviews. Today it is the Colonial Viper MK II statue. This has everything I liked about the Cylon Raider statue but even better. Once again all I want to do is play with it but you can't. It isn't nearly as fragile feeling as the Raider but this is still no plastic toy.

This is not the most modern Viper flying in the Battlestar fleet but I like this one the most because it keeps a strong tie with the original show. If you ever saw the original show, this should be easily recognizable.

The packaging is once again a nice overall box. Nice solid colors with a star field. No window on the box - it is solid all the way around.

Once again you get multiple views of the statue as you look on each side of the box.

The Viper is about six inches wide and ten inches long. I don't know what scale that makes the Viper. You can see that it allows for far more detail than you can see on the small Hasbro Titanium Viper.

The scale is almost a bit frustrating however as it is just a touch too small for a Battlestar Galactica Minimate figure to fit inside the cockpit. I can't seem to avoid wanting to play with these statues.

As I just mentioned the cockpit glass does come off revealing the inner cockpit. This is where my only issue with this piece is. The cockpit glass is plastic. That isn't normally a big deal but mine is full of imperfections and microscopic bubbles. I recognize that in the big picture this is a pretty minor complaint. The rest of the ship is so beautiful, it is sad not to see the same quality in the glass.

I forgot to mention in the Raider review that these Battlestar statues were sculpted by Gentle Giant. They really are spot on. The paint job is terrific. There is a nice worn appearance to it instead of it being showroom floor ready.

The ship fits onto the base once again with a small metal stud on the bottom of the ship and a small hole on top of the base. The base looks very nice with the squadron patch/logo on it.

It is limited to 2003 total pieces made.

This will run you around $125 give or take a bit. I don't know why this cost me $25 less than the Raider. I bought them both through Previews via my local comic shop. There isn't $25 less with the statue - I actually think you have more detail and work with this Viper.

Your local comic shop may have it in stock but if they don't, there are plenty of online stores that do. You can even get it directly from Diamond Select Toys here on their site.

I am giving this a **** 1/2 out of five star rating.

I almost gave it five stars but I can't with that imperfect cockpit glass. This is really a top notch statue - I think it will end up being the best in DST's Battlestar ship statue line. I can't recommend it enough. If you are a fan of the show and can only afford one of these statues, save up for this one.
