06/06/2008 Kotobukiya Star Wars Boba Fett Statue ReviewI really am a fan boy and being a fan boy of Star Wars means pretty much one thing - I love Boba Fett. Yes, I recognize he had no significant part in the films and he pretty much "died" a chump's death but I love him none the less. Kotobukiya makes some pretty cool model kits disguised as statues (or are they statues disguised as model kits?). This is their second Boba Fett and the first in their Bounty Hunters series. Let's get right to it.
The box design is a slight departure from earlier Koto kits but it is also the standard design used now by other non-action figure Star Wars lines. It is very much looks like the same design as the Gentle Giant Star Wars offerings. This box will blend right in with other items like that. . The back of the box has a small window showing the bonus Darth Vader piece (more on that later).
And one side has another window showing Fett's helmet. While this box is not super dynamic, it is nice to see a uniform look to all Star Wars offerings like this.
Once you get the box open, most of the parts are in one big clam shell which is taped shut. There are those nasty twisty ties all over - have I mentioned before how much I hate those? I don't really see the purpose of them here as everything is already secured into place. Please for the love of whatever you find holy - PLEASE stop using these cursed wires!
You will also get a sheet of instructions that are mostly in Japanese. Koto is a Japanese company but they do market these here in the US now so why not throw in a set of English instructions as well? I guess it doesn't matter because I was able to put this together without looking at them anyway. I would like to able to read the materials they supplied.
Like I said this is easy to put together. There are only eight parts and they are all "plug and play" so to speak. No glue is needed and they all fit together tightly without having to exert too much effort. I saw no obvious gaps at the joints - everything did really fit together without any issues.
This piece is 11 3/4" tall overall. I wasn't for sure if I was going to like this pose when I first saw it in pictures but now that I have it in hand - I love it. It is dynamic just like the box says. What I like most about the pose is I can't remember any other Fett piece sharing this pose. Too many Fett pieces start all looking the same so it is very nice to see something new.
The paint job is very good. This particular uniform and weapons set is the Return of the Jedi Boba Fett. This makes it a nice companion to Koto's previous Fett as it was The Empire Strikes Back Fett. I don't feel like I just got the same old Fett again.
One big improvement from Koto's first Fett is this one has a moveable view finder. Not only does this give you another way to display this statue but it can help keep it from snapping off. I can be really clumsy at times and am always worried about breaking off this piece on other Fett pieces I own. The movement in it is also tight enough that it doesn't just fall down on its own.
As hinted above this piece also comes with the left arm to Darth Vader. Why you ask? All six of the Bounty Hunters come with one piece of Darth Vader as well as base connector pieces. Once you have bought all six, you can connect the bases together forming one large Imperial symbol base. All the Darth Vader pieces then can be assembled and Darth Vader goes in the center of the Bounty Hunters. While a build a Vader seems cool on the surface, I can't imagine the space needed to display them all together like that. Since I am already overflowing with too many toys, I will probably stop with this statue. It is a very cool idea but a little too much for me. I suspect I won't be the only one only going after Fett so I suspect this will be the hardest of the six to get in the long run.
This cost me $125.00 at my local comic shop so it is pricey. I have seen them as low as $99.99 on various web stores so even with shipping, you could get it less than I did - if they have Fett still in stock that is. I am giving this statue a **** rating out of five stars. It is a very cool statue but it is pricey. Do you need it if you already have the other Koto Fett? The Gentle Giant Fett statue? The Gentle Giant Fett Bust? The Attikus Fett statue? The Sideshow Premium Fett? The various 12" Fetts? etc, etc, etc? I don't know but I am a sucker for Boba Fett and I wanted him. If you aren't a Fett addict like me, you can probably pass. If you don't have any yet, this would be a good one to start with. I am finishing this review with a comparison shot of the two Koto Boba Fett models/statues.
