06/21/2008 Diamond Select Toys Battlestar Galactica Cylon Raider Statue Review

Diamond Select Toys continues their line of Battlestar Galactica ship statues with this Cylon Raider. It does not disappoint and is a worthy follow up to the Battlestar Galactica statue.

I have been wanting larger versions of the Battlestar ships for awhile now. The small Hasbro Titanium versions are nice but the small size does restrict the amount of detail you can have on them. This gave me what I was wanting.

Remember this is a resin statue and not a toy. You won't want to play with it as it will break.

The packaging is a pretty nice overall box. There is nothing earth shattering about it but I like the colors in conjunction with the star field background. It is a nice, classic look. I didn't take a picture of it but the styrofoam insert inside has the Battlestar logo on it as well.

Each side of the box has a different view of the ship. This should help the customer get a good look at what the statue looks like without seeing the actual ship inside.

The Raider is about seven inches wide and ten and a half inches long. I am not for sure what scale this makes the Raider but it does have a good overall size to it. The size does allow for many more details not seen on the small Hasbro Titanium Raiders.

This is not a plastic toy at all. You won't be able to play with it even though that may be your first instinct to do so. This is made of resin and you will need to respect that about it. The piece feels really fragile. The most notable fragile feeling parts are the guns and the forward swept wings. I dread snapping something off.

The Raider fits to the base via a metal stud on the bottom of the ship and a hole on the top of the base. It is a nice fit and I don't think you will get any rub damage from the two pieces fitting up on one another. I don't know if the base is supposed to represent something from the show but it does not distract from the ship.

I am sure someone out there with a model kit could make a more accurate Raider but I would like to see them try. This sucker is just evil looking in my book and in this case that is a good thing. It looks good at every angle. That Cylon head in particular looks very evil.

I am not certain how accurate the paint scheme is because the Raiders always seem to be zooming by when they are on the show but I like it. There were no flaws with the paint application - no slop.

The only flaw I could spot with this piece is how it was numbered. The box and the COA both state that it was limited to 2007 pieces but the bottom of the base says 2003. This is a real nitpicking flaw as it is just a typo and shouldn't keep you from getting it.

This will run you around $150 give or take about $25. Your local comic shop may have it in stock but if they don't, there are plenty of online stores that do. You can even get it directly from Diamond Select Toys here on their site.

I am giving this a **** out of five star rating.

At $150 it is a little expensive and may not be for everyone but it sure is beautiful. You are getting your moneys worth here. Part of me does wish it was a toy because I want to play with it the minute I see it. I recognize that if it was a plastic toy, it probably wouldn't look nearly as good as it does. I am very happy with the end result.
