April 30, 2008 DC Direct Jack Kirby's New Gods Darkseid figure
I have to be honest - I make mine Marvel. I think we gravitate to whatever comics we were exposed to first as a kid. I was always a Marvel Comics kid. Having said that I am not unfamiliar with the DC Comics universe - I am a fan of several characters from it. I am just not an expert on it. When I pick up DC Direct figures, I tend to be particular to certain characters rather than collecting whole lines. I didn't intend to buy any figures from this line until I saw them in person. This New Gods line is based on Jack Kirby's original designs. The series consists of four figures: Mr Miracle, Lightray, Orion and Darkseid. How can you not love Jack Kirby? Even as a Marvel fan I was exposed to him very early in my life with the Devil Dinosaur comic series. These figures represent in my eyes the most accurate translation of his art to an action figure I have ever seen. Once I saw them, I knew I had to get the biggest and baddest of the bunch - Darkseid! What a monster of toy this is.
The packaging seems classic Kirby to me with the artwork and the coloring. Everything is spot on. It is nothing more than a classic card back and bubble but it works well in this case. The figure is very well sculpted getting all the right Kirby details in it. There isn't a complex paint scheme but in this case simple works well. The articulation is average but I really don't want my Darkseid to be super poseable. I would rather have him be able to hold a few menacing poses. He stands approximately seven inches tall so he is not an overwhelmingly large figure compared to other DC Direct figures.
There are a few accessories packed in. This is where my lack of expert knowledge of the DC Universe shows. First you get a base that looks sort of like a boom tube opening but I could be wrong. There is also a small hand held controller that I didn't even see in the package at first. If you are looking at in the package, this accessory is hiding behind the Darkseid sticker at the top left corner of the bubble. Be careful and don't accidentally throw it out with the bubble. You also get a power glove of some sort that you can swap out with the right hand.
This figure is shipping now at your local comic book store. I paid $16 for mine so I would expect you would pay somewhere in that vicinity for yours. It is worth it in my eyes. I am giving it a **** out of 5 rating. I simply couldn't ask for a better action figure representation of a classic Jack Kirby character.
