05/25/2008 Hasbro Marvel Mighty Muggs Wolverine ReviewI have tried to stay away from the Hasbro Mighty Muggs figures. So far I had only picked up a Boba Fett. It isn't that I am not a fan of artistic vinyl figures, I was just a little perplexed by this line. They just looked a little weird to me. Being that I am collecting enough other stuff, I was a little relieved not to want to start collecting yet another toy line. I picked up the mandatory Boba Fett figure and moved on with my current collecting. I saw wave after wave of Star Wars Mighty Muggs come out and very few jumped out to me to buy. I was happy with my decision not to collect this line - until I saw the Marvel Mighty Muggs. These comic book characters seem to translate to this toy design better for me. I fought the urge to pick up several of them and finally caved with this Wolverine.
The packaging is nice and simple - the colors and lines snap right off the box to get your attention. There is one major flaw in it however - the box flaps are glued shut. . Hasbro had to know that this toy line will be much more successful with adult collectors than with kids. Gluing the box flaps closed makes it nearly impossible to open the box and remove the figure without some serious box damage. It had to cost more to have these glued shut so I don't understand why they did this. Did they anticipate these being a high theft item because they are "urban vinyl"? I don't mean to unnecessarily make light of the situation, it just seems like a little too much effort to keep a box shut. I don't understand.
When I first looked at the figure loose from the package, I was struck how much I liked it. It has only the most basic of articulation - the neck and shoulders. The color scheme is bright and the lines sharp. It popped in my hands until I started looking closer...
You are probably looking at those two loose pictures wondering what I was seeing wrong. Once I started really looking at it, I noticed at a couple of places where the paint lines aren't sharp and blur into one another. I could feel in a couple of other spots where paint applications where painted on top of one another to cause an uneven surface. There were also many micro bumpy spots that you could feel all over the figure. They were so small that you would have a hard time seeing them but you could feel them with your finger tips. I was able to get rid of most of them by scratching gently with a finger nail. These aren't major things but when you have such a simple design with such a simple paint scheme, I want a little more quality than that. Hopefully I have the one rare example throwing off the curve. This cost me $9.99 at my local Target. I think these can be as much as $15 at some stores. They are worth $10 in my eyes but I am not certain most are worth $15.00. I would suggest you pick and choose the ones you want over collecting them all. I am giving this figure a *** rating out of five stars. It is funky and fun looking but it has too many paint flaws for such a simple design. The collector unfriendly packaging doesn't help either. I originally thought after picking this one up, I would also be buying the Hulk and Spider-Man ones in the near future. This one slowly loses my interest the longer I have it. I would really be surprised if I pick up many more up if any at all.
